Campus Plan

Our campus is more than the physical spaces we share – it's also a place of profound community for students, faculty, staff and alumni.

Now is the time to reimagine our campus so that it fully supports the promise and potential of our community far into the future.

About The Plan

The Comprehensive Campus Plan emerges from a process of listening, exploration, and discussion that generates ideas and possibilities to meet our community's goals for this campus and how it serves our educational mission.

The University of Michigan-Flint Comprehensive Campus Plan builds on our Strategic Transformation Initiative. In this effort, we take input collected from our campus community and focus on how that thinking translates into the physical campus space--now and for the next 10-15 years. It aligns with the enterprise-wide University of Michigan carbon neutrality goals and its strategic visioning and campus planning work.

What is a Comprehensive Campus Plan?

A Comprehensive Campus Plan, also sometimes called a facilities master plan, is designed to guide the development and evolution of our campus facilities and spaces through renovations and redevelopment, so that it fully supports the greatest possibilities for UM-Flint and its mission. It guides how we use buildings, structures, and open spaces to enhance the overall campus experience of students, faculty, staff, and the community while protecting and enhancing historical and other important spaces.

Created in alignment with the university’s mission and vision, the Comprehensive Campus Plan will guide the development of our campus over the long term and provide clear, flexible, and actionable short- and long-term direction for our physical spaces and how they serve our ambitions and values.

Why is a Comprehensive Campus Plan Important?

A campus plan informs how an institution uses buildings and spaces to meet its academic, scholarly, research, artistic, service, strategic, and related goals.

Our Comprehensive Campus Plan will guide us in ensuring that we meet these goals with our physical spaces and places while advancing accessibility, inclusion, and opportunity. It will articulate concepts and priorities that help make UM-Flint a vital place for everyone in the community, including students, faculty and staff.

How Does This Align With Our Strategic Efforts?

The University of Michigan-Flint serves the region by providing opportunities for professional development, growth, and innovation. As an institution, we are always learning, and we strive to be responsive to the changing needs of our diverse students, the world in which they live and work and the communities we serve.

In November 2022, President Santa J. Ono announced the University of Michigan would initiate a ten-year strategic vision for the entire university including all three campuses and Michigan Medicine, called Vision 2034.

The Comprehensive Campus Plan is one vital component of a three-part planning process (Strategy, Academics, Physical) to guide UM-Flint’s decision-making to inform Vision 2034, each needing involvement from the campus community, and each relying on the other parts to complete the whole. The Comprehensive Campus Plan will harness the capabilities of our physical campus to strengthen key areas of strategic importance to the campus community.

Process and Timeline

Each phase builds upon the previous one to generate ideas and deepen our understanding of the issues and opportunities that will inform the campus planning effort. We look forward to hearing from you!

Understanding Current Spaces and Facilities

Our comprehensive campus planning process begins with input from those who know the institution best. We gain a deep understanding of our shared goals, aspirations, and current challenges for our existing campus facilities and spaces.

Exploring Campus Challenges and Opportunities

We use data and analysis to explore campus challenges and opportunities, with a special focus on how we use space to serve students.  We assess building conditions, parking needs, traffic flow for cars and pedestrians, and the quality of landscapes and natural systems. Focusing on these elements helps us determine opportunities for sustainable development and areas of improvement for our physical campus framework, from accommodating strategic investment to creating new transportation linkages and enlivening campus spaces.

Realizing Our Ideal Campus

The strongest ideas that emerge from the prior phases inform the new Comprehensive Campus Plan. Through development, renovation, and re-purposing space to recommendations for improvements to current campus systems, the Comprehensive Campus Plan provides a strong, flexible framework to help guide the university for years to come.
